The FMEQ is the Federation uniting the four medical student associations of Quebec. Each faculty offers a Doctorate of Medicine program in which the pedagogical approach used reflects each school’s unique philosophy. Here is a summary:

Laval University

Membership association : RÉMUL

Students are free to decide whether to do their pre-clerkship training in two or three years and must plan their optional courses accordingly. Then, they follow a two-year clerkship for a total of four to five years of doctoral study, after which they are bestowed the title M.D. Also, Laval University students have the opportunity to pursue an international internship. This allows them to take a summer elective abroad while still taking classes registered by the Faculty, which helps give direction to their learning experience. At Laval University, teaching is achieved mainly through lectures, while still having some problem based learning in small groups, self-learning modules, lab sessions, and hospital rotations.

McGill University

Membership association : MSS

McGill’s program includes a preparatory year for students coming directly from CEGEP, plus four years of medical schooling before obtaining an M.D. During this preparatory year, students are members of the Faculties of Science. They will attend various science (biology, physiology, chemistry) and social science courses. Then, McGill offers a four-year undergraduate program which allows the attainment of the M.D. and is composed of five elements. First, the basis of medicine and dentistry as well as the role of a physician are taught for one and a half years in the form of lectures, labs and problem based learning. Then, during the second half of the second year there is a transition towards clinical practice and finally clerkship I and II, which consists of two years of core and elective rotations leading to an optimum clinical training. At McGill, teaching is solely in English, but that doesn’t prevent students from submitting assignments or taking tests in French if they so desire. Furthermore, many patients encountered in McGill University Health Centers (MUHC’s) will be francophone; thus, a decent understanding of the French language remains an essential asset.

Montreal University

Membership association : AEEMUM

The program at Montreal University consists in total of four to five years of schooling, much like McGill. Students arriving from CEGEP or with a Bachelor’s degree in a field not related to medicine will begin with a preparatory year consisting mainly of lecture courses pertaining to the basic sciences. Then, students with a related degree join the class for the first two years of pre-clinical study. In the form of problem based learning, each organ system is studied individually. Also, once a week, students make their way into hospitals to consolidate what they’ve studied and to start applying their clinical reasoning. Finally, to complete their M.D., students spend the two following years in various rotations.

Sherbrooke University

Membership association : AGÉMUS

Sherbrooke University’s M.D. program consists of 167 weeks spanning four years of intensive training that are divided into two and a half years of pre-clinical and one and a half years of clerkship. Throughout the program, students are required to accomplish certain parts of their training outside of their main instruction campus. The vast network of teaching institutions affiliated with the University’s medical faculty allows students to familiarize themselves with various clinical settings and to experience cultural diversity early-on in their training, which constitutes an exceptional learning experience for any aspiring physician.
