McGill’s program includes a preparatory year for students coming directly from CEGEP, plus four years of medical schooling before obtaining an M.D. During this preparatory year, students are members of the Faculties of Science. They will attend various science (biology, physiology, chemistry) and social science courses. Then, McGill offers a four-year undergraduate program which allows the attainment of the M.D. and is composed of five elements. First, the basis of medicine and dentistry as well as the role of a physician are taught for one and a half years in the form of lectures, labs and problem based learning. Then, during the second half of the second year there is a transition towards clinical practice and finally clerkship I and II, which consists of two years of core and elective rotations leading to an optimum clinical training. At McGill, teaching is solely in English, but that doesn’t prevent students from submitting assignments or taking tests in French if they so desire. Furthermore, many patients encountered in McGill University Health Centers (MUHC’s) will be francophone; thus, a decent understanding of the French language remains an essential asset.
